Abstract

The article is devoted to allusion as one of the ways of intertextuality category realization. The author analyzed the works of national scientists on the problem of allusion classification and its functions in the literary text. The author studied historical allusions, which are the names of historical figures, names of historical places that represent the historical realities. The historical allusions are found in the novels of Dan Brown «Angels and Demons», «The Da Vinci Code», «The Lost Symbol», «Inferno». Considerable attention is paid to the disclosure of the functions of historical allusions on the material of English
detective novel. On the basis of the study the author concluded that the historical allusions in the text of modern English detective novel perform occasional function, the writers use them as the hint to the certain historical facts and personalities. The historical allusion may also perform the following functions: assessment and characterizing function, they indicate the features of the characters; nominative function, the historical allusions name the historical personality and form the concept of a historical period; aesthetic function, they help to awake reader’s positive emotions, serve as the source of word beauty; function of image characteristics, irony function, function of getting the additional information.
