The relevance of the research described in the article is that studying of the nature of linguistic phenomena and the cognitive mechanisms and structures of human consciousness through them becomes possible by using a cognitive approach, according to which metonymy is viewed not only as a linguistic phenomenon, but also as one of the principles of organization of everyday thinking and a certain way of conceptualizing and categorizing reality. The synthesis of the discoveries of cognitive linguistics with theoretical and practical developments of neuroscience and psychology is beneficial process for these
sciences. Linguistics can direct the course of neurobiological research, determining what should be sought in the brain to reveal the mysticism of the language. The study is focused on the cognitive mechanism of metonymy creation. The subject of studying is metonymy in cognitive linguistics. Such terms as «metonymy», «idealized cognitive model», «cognitive linguistics» are characterized with an emphasis on the importance of these categories for the development of linguistics as a science. Cognitive interpretation of metonymy and relevant examples are reviewed and analyzed. It is noted that research of cognitive mechanisms of transposition of meaning still requires systematic study of their semantic and structural parameters and semantic content in the future.
