Abstract

The article deals with the analysis of compound words in English economic discourse. The definition of the term «compound word» is given. The essence of economic discourse is specified. The phonetic peculiarities of composites are determined. Composites with the stress on the first, second syllables and with the double stress are considered. Specific features in spelling are studied. The tendency towards confusable spelling of compound words is stressed. The structure of compound words is studied on the base of morphological, semantic and syntactic characteristics. The typical models of composites in English economic discourse are identified. It is concluded that two- and three-component lexical units are dominant. The importance of identifying the semantic centre within composites is stressed. The elements of different styles (informal, business, scientific etc.) are found out in the structure of compound words in English economic discourse. The role of composites as means of simplifying communication and providing the language with sufficient information capacity is determined.
