Abstract

The article deals with the story of Joseph Roth «The legend of the holy drinker». The authors of this study analysed the complex sentences that occur in this work and that are a functional and structural feature of both this story and Joseph Roth’s style in general.
Experts know that every style is characterised by a certain number of transformations, which consist of differential linguistic features that distinguish each language in different ways.
A special place in this list has the structure of the German language, which, on the one hand, is considered concise, if to take into account the possibility of forming compound words with the help of several words; on the other hand, impresses with the length of the sentences, which in turn can consist of several as coherent, and subordinate sentences. Analysing the story «Legend of the holy drinker» you can see that almost every fifth sentence is a complex defining sentence.
In the study of the aforementioned linguistic units, it turned out that the largest number of sentences are the subordinate indicative sentences with a locative sign and those that have a consistent subordination. There is also a significant part of the subordinate indicative sentences with prepositional conjugations, which is due to the specifics of the German language, namely the government of the verbs.
The structure of these defining sentences determines their functionality and the peculiarity of this work. After all, with the help of subordinate locative sentences and sentences with consistent subordination, the author managed to focus not only on the protagonist but also on his environment.
