Abstract

The article is devoted to the means of syntactic expressiveness of the language of modern Ukrainian women’s travel prose. It has been found out that the most used means of expressive syntax in the mentioned works are interrogative and exclamative sentences. The basic functions of expressive syntactic structures, and their pragmatic component in particular, have been studied. The questions that dialogize the narration have been noted, they are directed to the reader and are designed to increase the reader’s attention.
Particular attention has been paid to the auto-dialogue, in which the interrogative sentences convey attention to the traveler’s own psychological state and changes in it caused by travel. It has been found out that purely rhetorical questions in the texts of travel essays are also related to the experience of world perception and certain forms of reception of such experience.
It has been revealed that the exclamative sentences in connection with the theme of travel essays convey the mood of travelers caused by new impressions and sensations. According to our observations, the most saturated with exclamation sentences is the travelogue “Letters from the Equator” by Anna Yaremenko. It can be explained by both the extremity of the African experience, and the peculiarities of the author’s disposition.
A special feature of Lesya Voronina’s idiostyle is the enhancement of the exclamation with the help of several exclamation marks. Also, a common practice is to emphasize a word using graphic highlighting in capital letters. It is also typical of Lesya Voronina and is sometimes combined with syntactic destruction due to the introduction of exclamation marks into the sentence.
All means of syntactic expression: exclamative sentences, parcellation, gradation of adverbs, rhetorical question-vocative – serve a single goal – to express extremity, and exclusivity of the moment. This is the most common phenomenon for travelogues.
