Abstract

The article deals with lexical and stylistic features of the author’s words including the description of surrounding environment in literary texts of the English and Ukrainian languages. It is sated that together with their descriptive function aimed at conveying the fact of anybody’s speech and presenting the speakers themselves, the author’s words can acquire different connotations. For the recipient to evaluate the direct speech there is a need to depict the complementary context (mood, gestures, and facial expressions of the speakers) and describe the surrounding environment where the act of speech can occurs. It has been studied that in the Ukrainian and English languages such constructions contain not only the verbs to denote speaking, movements, gestures, thought process, etc. but the additional information about the location of the communicators, time of the day, outline the material world around communicating persons. The article defines that the author uses his remarks to introduce description of the landscape both directly and indirectly, through smells and sounds, so as to transmit emotions and feelings of the heroes. However, in most cases the nature is noted to be presented through a metaphorized description in the author’s words. The results of the study have shown that the author’s remarks including the description of surrounding environment can be a very productive means of creating heroes’ images in literary texts of the English and Ukrainian languages.
