Abstract

The article deals with the linguistic and didactic bases of mastering non-verbal communication in Ukrainian by foreign students. The following concepts are distinguished: verbal communication, non-verbal communication, verbal and non-verbal communication, etc. In this paper, the authors characterize the main properties of non-verbal communication in the process of learning it by foreign students. This is extremely important today, as the Ukrainian language is gaining popularity every day. We transmit only 20-40% of information through verbal communication, and the rest through non-verbal means. The authors analyze the latest publications on this topic, in particular the works of A. Bushynska, A. Metelska, and Z. Kunch. They also share their experience of teaching the discipline “Nonverbal Communication: National and Cultural Specificity” to foreign students of the educational program “Ukrainian Language and Translation (for Foreigners)” at the Educational and Research Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The purpose of the discipline is to master theoretical knowledge, basic concepts of non-verbal communication in the process of intercultural communication and communication between people in the same cultural group, as well as to study the relationship of expressive human behavior with its individual and characteristic features, to consider different types of non-verbal communication, to understand their meaning and reasons for their manifestation. The discipline is aimed at developing knowledge about non-verbal interaction between people; familiarizing with the extra-linguistic factors that determine the communicative behavior of Ukrainians and affect communication with representatives of other nationalities; teaching foreigners to establish visual contact, taking into account facial expressions (facial expressions), posture, body gestures, distance between interlocutors, pace and time, touch, etc. In addition, the authors provide examples of tasks for mastering non-verbal communication by foreign students.
