Abstract

The authors emphasize the need to implement the principles of accessibility in the educational environment, since today there are more than 3 million people with special needs in Ukraine, and society must realize that this number will continue to grow due to the consequences of the war. Creating a barrier-free educational environment is a pressing and priority task for educators, who must ensure equal opportunities in obtaining professional and quality education for all citizens, including people with special needs. The study also reviews the current principles of accessibility in higher philological education (the main tasks for creating educational opportunities for people with special educational needs, accessibility of education, etc.). The authors of this work are lecturers at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology and use the Concept of Inclusive Education Development “University of Equal Opportunities” dated June 3, 2020, of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in their work. The paper proposes certain steps to improve the educational environment in accordance with the basic principles of accessibility, such as taking accessibility standards into account as a mandatory component when developing and updating educational programs, curricula, and educational components. Develop individual learning plans for people with special needs. Monitor the implementation of individual plans and adjust them as necessary. Allow for the adaptation of tasks (e.g., replacing an oral presentation with a written essay, or vice versa) depending on the individual needs of the student. In the future, teachers should include in their course syllabi the theoretical foundations of working with students with special needs, a short glossary of terms, and topics related to correct, tolerant language and ethics of communication with people with special needs.
