Biblical phraseology in Ukrainian and English online magazines

Abstract

This article describes the peculiarities of biblical phraseology usage in popular Ukrainian and English online magazines. The semantics and functions of biblical and religious idioms in modern famous publications were analyzed. There were also noted several peculiarities of author’s interpretations of traditional expressive means. The research material is the sample of most frequently used phraseological units of biblical or religious origin of the most popular modern (2010-2016) online editions.
Here we used the descriptive, contextual method, the method of variations for the phraseology study, and elements of the comparative method. It was found that most of statements analyzed saved their traditional meaning or have an identical one. One uses biblical idioms in order to get more expressive figurative naming of ideas or phenomena. Some units in both English and Ukrainian articles of different magazines and authors have the same meaning. It means, they turned into the stock phrases
