Abstract

The article deals with manifestations of the unconscious in the artistic creation of man on the example of the study of artistic literary works. As the source of the material works by W. Golding, one of the most significant prose writers in the UK, are used. Since it is believed that reliable results of the study can be obtained only after analyzing all the works of the author, in the analysis, all twelve novels of the writer are used. An appeal to the analysis of a metaphor in the works of a particular author allows us to explore the specific traits of the author’s individual cognitive space.
In the analysis of metaphorical expressions in the works of W. Golding it is established that in the process of metaphorical rethinking of objects and phenomena of nature, as well as of many concepts related to a human being, a significant role is played by metaphor-personification, which at the linguistic level manifests itself in the great number of metaphorical expressions in the texts of his novels and becomes a distinctive feature of the idiostyle of the writer. Such features of W. Golding’s idiostyle can be explained by the activity of the unconscious of the writer. Based on the peculiarities of the author’s style, which it provides, one can speak of the affiliation of works to a certain person and use it when establishing authorship.
