Abstract

The article focuses on the multifaceted relation between culture, communication and thinking with language in the context of the theory of intercultural communication and cognitive linguistics. Language as a means of communication, identification and socialization stores and preserves the cultural heritage of mankind determining the system of value orientations in society. The research defines the linguocultural and semantic-cognitive features of the English axiological world view as a fragment of linguocultural image on the material of phraseological units which represent the components of the typical situation of rivalry thus reflecting the English-speaking society system of representations. The notional and axiological conceptualization of the surrounding phenomena is connected with the phraseological fund of the language, which reflects the qualitative activity of the collective consciousness. The structure of the concept determines its place in the conceptosphere and is conditioned by its content – a set of cognitive attributes that reflect socially marked phenomenon properties. The periphery component of the concept structure is constituted by the axiological image of the typical situation. Value prescriptions on the nominated subject, constituents of rivalry in particular, are singled out due to conceptual analysis and cognitive interpretation method. They embody information about axiologically marked features of the concept investigated adding extanded and refined data to the notional content.
