Abstract

The article examines the antithesis as one of the stylistic figures of Leviathan’s artistic work, which is a crucial element of conceptual discourse and allows us to speak about the isolation of Joseph Roth’s idiostyle.
The antithesis presented by the author in the work of Leviathan is not just a comparison of two words, phrases, sentences, etc., but comparison and even a juxtaposition of the two worlds – the real and the dreamed one. Through this antithesis, the author managed to convey the tragedy of the dreamed world through beauty, through descriptions of the main character, because of the contrast between the beautiful, the ugly, the weak, the strong, the pale, the bright, which gives the work a specific colour and can be considered an exceptional kind of antithesis.
Using concepts such as comparison and antithesis, we can say that a comparison is a litmus unit. It defines the essence and truth of a phenomenon, and if we speak of a language that also reflects the spiritual side of native speakers, namely: mentality, value system, morality, then we are talking about style and the author in whose language we discover being. After all, antithesis opens many ways for individual style, because it has different stylistic functions and contributes to the immersion in the essence of the phenomenon that we know.
In this context, it is possible to distinguish such kind of antithesis as stylistic antithesis, which not only isolates the idiostyle of the author but is also a critical linguistic and stylistic unit of the whole conceptual discourse.
