Abstract

The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of military terminology in artistic discourse. The subject of the analysis is military terms found in the autobiographical novel “You Can’t Fight, You Can’t Retreat” by the modern Ukrainian writer Pavlo Belyansky. The artist’s work has not yet been studied, so our research, devoted to the analysis of military terminology, is relevant.
The purpose of the article was to carry out a linguistic analysis of military terminology as a means of reproducing the realities of combat operations in the prose of P. Belyansky, to describe the semantics and creation of terms, to clarify the functional load and role of terminology in the formation of the artistic image of modern war.
As a result of the analysis, nineteen thematic groups of military terminology were identified, representing various spheres of military activity, namely: names of types of weapons and military equipment, names of ammunition and explosive devices, terminology for designating military equipment and equipment, names of military units and formations, tactical and strategic terms, terms for designating types of combat operations and operations, military ranks and positions, etc. Analysis of the structure of terms in the work “It is impossible to retreat in battle” indicates the predominance of two-component terms-phrases. It is noted that single-word terms are usually formed by suffix, prefix, prefix-suffix methods, truncation. Productive methods of creating terms are also stem- and word-compounding, abbreviation.
It is found that military terms in the novel “You Can’t Retreat to Fight” not only perform a nominative function, but also become an important stylistic device that ensures the authenticity of the depiction of military realities, creates a special linguistic atmosphere of the work, and characterizes the characters.
