Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of American social dialects as an important object of contemporary sociolinguistic research. It examines the theoretical foundations of the concept of a social dialect, including its definition, structure, and key distinguishing features. The study characterizes the main varieties of social dialects in the United States, such as ethnic, professional, age-based, and socio-economic dialects, and highlights their specific linguistic features at the phonetic, lexical, and grammatical levels. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of modern scientific approaches to the study of American social dialects, including variationist sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, as well as their role in shaping social identity and language variation.
The article also explores the social functions of dialects, emphasizing their importance as markers of group belonging, cultural heritage, and interpersonal communication. In addition, it addresses the issues of language variation and the stigmatization of non-standard language forms, which often reflect broader social inequalities and attitudes toward different social groups. The findings underline the dynamic nature of language in the United States and demonstrate how social dialects contribute to linguistic diversity while simultaneously influencing speakers’ perceptions, identity construction, and social interaction in a multicultural society.
