Abstract

The author analyses, with reference to the Ukrainian, English and German languages, the peculiarities of the metaphorical rethinking of spatial attributes in phraseological units denoting the internal qualities of a person.
Nowadays there are mainly developed provisions on phraseological units as a special type of linguistic sign in phraseology, their relationship with the word is defined, as well as the place of phraseology in the language system. In this regard, the focus of phraseology has shifted to the study of the internal properties of the object because the problem of the internal form of phraseological units is complex and multidimensional. Spatial relationships can be the basis for rethinking, which is implemented in metaphorization. In this case, the figurative basis containing the spatial image acts as an internal form of the secondary name. The author investigates the peculiarities of the organization of the internal form of these phraseological units. The inner form of idiom, being the bearer of motivation, often contains elements of the national-cultural plan. As the study showed, the formation of phraseological units can be influenced by historical realities, mythical images or some other factors.
